Check whether my deck fits the time. Slides with a note on content type (text, chart, demo, discussion) and my estimate of minutes each: [SLIDE_TIMINGS]. Total time available including questions: [TOTAL_MINUTES]. Minutes reserved for questions: [QA_MINUTES].

Add up the estimates in a table with Slide, Type, Estimated minutes and Cumulative minutes, compare with the time available after reserving questions, and say by how many minutes I overrun or have spare. Example (invented): 18 slides, with 10 text slides at 1 minute, 5 chart slides at 2 minutes, a demo at 5 and discussion at 3. Identify slides likely to take longer than estimated (charts, demos, discussions are least predictable) and slides to cut or shorten. Add a five percent buffer for transitions and technical delay, show checkpoints at 25, 50 and 75 percent of the time with the slide I should be on, and a shortened running order for losing ten minutes or 20 percent of the time. Say what to say when behind and what to add if ahead. Return revised timings that add up, and show all sums.

Invented estimate: 18 slides; text slides 10 x 1 minute = 10; chart slides 5 x 2 = 10; demo 1 x 5 = 5; discussion 2 x 3 = 6. Total = 31 minutes. Available 30 minus 5 for questions = 25. Overrun = 6 minutes. Cut 3 text slides (3 minutes) and shorten the demo to 3 minutes (2 saved) and one discussion to 2 minutes (1 saved) = 6 minutes. Checkpoints: at 25 percent of the time (7.5 of 30 minutes) I should be on slide 6; at half time (15 minutes) on slide 10; at 80 percent (24 minutes) on slide 16, leaving five minutes for questions. If I am behind at the half-way point, I skip the second chart slide and summarise it in one sentence.
