Inappropriate Interview Question Response Plan
Decide how to respond to questions that cross a line.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Help me prepare for interview questions that may be inappropriate or discriminatory. Country or region: [JURISDICTION]. Role: [ROLE]. I am worried about questions on: [TOPICS_OF_CONCERN] (for example age, family plans, health, nationality, religion). This is general guidance, not legal advice.
Build a decision tree:
1. Is the question related to my ability to do the job? IF yes THEN answer. IF it is unclear THEN go on.
2. Could the question seek protected information (see the rules in [JURISDICTION])? IF yes, choose a response style:
- Redirect: answer the underlying legitimate concern ("I can commit to the schedule and travel this role needs.").
- Clarify politely: "Could you tell me how that relates to the role?"
- Decline politely: "I'd prefer to keep personal matters out of the discussion, but I'm happy to talk about my availability."
- End the interview and report it, if it is hostile or repeated.
3. After the interview: write down the question, date, and who asked, and decide whether to report it to the employer's human resources, a regulator, or a legal adviser.
Provide sample scripts for each response style in a calm tone for the topics I listed, advice on how to judge the culture revealed, and a note that I decide how much to share. Suggest consulting a local employment rights service or lawyer [VERIFY]. Do not state specific legal rules unless I provide a source.
