Research Request Intake Form and Scoping Brief
Turn vague stakeholder research requests into a scoped brief with the decision at stake, questions, method choice and a no-research option.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Help me handle research requests from colleagues. The request as it was given to me: [RESEARCH_REQUEST]. Who asked and their role: [REQUESTER_ROLE]. The decision it might inform and its date: [DECISION_AND_DATE]. What we already know: [EXISTING_KNOWLEDGE]. Time and people I have: [TIME_AND_PEOPLE]. Act as a research coach and do two things. First, write an intake form of no more than ten questions I can send to requesters, covering the decision, what would change depending on the answer, who the users are, what is already known, the deadline, and who else cares. Second, apply that form to the request I pasted and produce a scoping brief with the headings Decision to inform, Research questions (maximum three), What we will not answer, Suggested method and why, Participants, Effort in days with the arithmetic, Risks to the findings, and Output and review date. Add a short test called "Do we need research at all?" with five yes or no questions, such as whether we could decide with existing data, and give your verdict on my request. If research is not needed, say so plainly and suggest the cheapest alternative. Include a polite reply I can send to the requester under 100 words. Do not invent facts about my users or product. Where my information is thin, list the gaps as questions rather than guessing. Methods are suggestions to be judged by someone with research training. Add a worked example with invented details: a request to "find out what customers think of the new dashboard" two weeks before a roadmap decision, with 2 days of effort for interviews and 1 day for analysis.
