Data Dictionary Template and Builder
Document columns so others can use them.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Create a data dictionary. Dataset and columns with sample values: [COLUMNS_SAMPLES]. Source system and owners: [SOURCES_OWNERS]. Build a table with Column | Type | Description | Allowed values or range | Units | Missing value meaning | Source | Notes. Fill it from my samples and mark anything unknown [TO_CONFIRM]. Add checks that can be run in pandas to verify each constraint. Explain how to keep the dictionary updated, who reviews changes, and how to store it next to the data. Provide a short example of a good and a poor column description. Add a short automated check design that compares the dictionary with the actual columns and flags undocumented or renamed columns, and a review routine each time the source system changes. Include a plain-language description of a column that is ambiguous and the questions to ask the owner to clarify it. Also add a short checklist of five questions to ask the data owner for each column that is unclear.
