Self-Editing Pass for Common Weaknesses
Find your own habits in a draft.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Run a self-editing analysis on my draft. Sample of 1,000 to 2,000 words: [SAMPLE]. Genre: [GENRE]. Count and list instances of: filter words (felt, saw, noticed), adverbs, passive constructions, repeated words and phrases, throat-clearing openings, similes, and dialogue tags other than said. Provide counts in a table and per-1,000-word rates. Show examples from my text and a fix for each. Rank the issues by how much they affect reading. Suggest a revision routine of six steps and a way to check improvement on the next sample. Avoid blanket rules; note when a flagged item is a good choice. Add a sample before and after paragraph, labelled as invented, that shows the edits applied. Provide a checklist of ten quick searches to run in a word processor, such as ly words and 'that', with advice on how to judge each hit rather than deleting all. Include a plan to repeat the analysis on a later chapter.
