Proofreading Pass Checklist
Catch errors in a final pass.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Prepare a proofreading plan for my text. Document type and length: [DOCUMENT]. Style guide or spelling variant (US, UK): [STYLE_SPELLING]. Typical errors I make: [MY_ERRORS]. Create a checklist grouped as spelling and typos, punctuation, grammar, consistency (numbers, capitalisation, hyphenation), formatting, and names. Provide a method of three passes with different focus each time, techniques such as reading backwards or changing the font, and a log for recurring errors. Then proofread the sample I provide: [SAMPLE_TEXT]. List each error with the correction and the rule in one line. Explain any style choices that are preferences rather than rules. Add a section on proofreading a printed proof versus a screen, and a technique for catching repeated words across line breaks. Provide a short list of commonly confused word pairs with examples written freshly, and a note on when to stop proofreading, after two clean passes with no new errors found. Also remind me which errors a spell checker will miss, such as correct words used in the wrong place, and give two examples of each type.
