Build a rubric for evaluating [DELIVERABLE_TYPE]. Who will use the rubric: [RUBRIC_USERS]. The qualities that matter most: [PRIORITIES]. A sample of work I consider excellent: [EXCELLENT_SAMPLE]. Create five or six criteria. For each, describe what a 1, 3 and 5 look like in observable terms, such as "names at least two risks with a reason" rather than "good analysis". Add weights that total 100. Include a short section called Automatic fails for problems that cap the score, for example invented facts. Return the rubric as a table, then a one-page scoring sheet with space for evidence quotes, then guidance for scorers on avoiding common mistakes: scoring on length, scoring on style rather than substance, and drifting standards over a long session. Pilot the rubric on three real pieces before adopting it. Ask two scorers to mark each piece independently, compare their scores, and revise any criterion where they differ by two or more points. Record the revisions with the date, so the rubric has a visible history. Keep language neutral and avoid words that need interpretation, such as professional or engaging, unless they are defined with examples. Show me the final weights and the arithmetic that confirms they total 100. Add three finishing pieces. First, a one-sentence statement of the pass mark and what happens below it, such as revise and resubmit. Second, a worked example: score a short invented sample paragraph on each criterion, with quoted evidence, so users see how the anchors apply. Third, a plan for reviewing the rubric after twenty uses: collect the cases where scorers argued, check which criteria were involved, and adjust the descriptions. Keep the rubric on a single page and write criteria as nouns, for example evidence and structure, with the level descriptions as short observable statements. Avoid criteria that overlap, because they double-count the same strength or weakness, and say which criteria you merged or removed for that reason.
