Power BI Naming Conventions and Field Folder Audit
Review table, column and measure names in a Power BI model for clarity, consistency and hidden clutter, then set a naming standard.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Please audit the naming and organisation inside my Power BI model so report builders and readers can find things. Mark statements about Power BI features, such as display folders, hiding fields and descriptions, as [VERIFY]. Inputs: all table names [TABLE_NAMES], column names per table [COLUMN_NAMES], measure names with the table they live in [MEASURE_NAMES], which fields are visible and which are hidden [VISIBILITY_INFO], the main audience for the model [AUDIENCE], and any current naming rules [CURRENT_RULES]. Return: (1) a table with columns Object, Current name, Type, Issue (Technical prefix, Abbreviation unclear, Inconsistent case, Duplicate meaning, Unit missing, Ambiguous, Key column visible, Fine), Suggested name; (2) counts of each issue type and the percent of objects needing change, with the arithmetic; (3) a list of fields that should be hidden from report builders (keys, helper columns) and those that need a description; (4) measure organisation: propose display folders and a measure table structure; (5) a naming convention of no more than 10 rules with 6 examples, including how to name units, percentages and time-based measures; (6) a rollout plan that warns me to check where each name is used in reports before renaming, because renaming may break visuals or other reports that depend on the model. Guardrails: do not rename anything automatically. Don't guess what an abbreviation means; list it as a question. Keep names short enough to read in a visual. Do not invent business definitions. Add a worked example with invented names: "dim_cust", "Cust Rev", "Measure1", "TotalSales" and "Total sales (USD)". Show the issue label and suggested name for each.
