Architecture Decision Record
Document a technical decision, its options and consequences.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Write an architecture decision record. Decision to be made or made: [DECISION]. Context and constraints: [CONTEXT]. Options considered: [OPTIONS]. Decision makers: [DECISION_MAKERS]. Date: [DATE]. Sections: title; status (proposed, accepted, superseded); context; options with pros and cons in a table; decision with the reason; consequences, both good and bad; risks and how we will notice them; and a review date. Keep it under one page and write so that someone joining in a year understands it. Use only the facts I supplied and mark open questions clearly. Include a line on what would make us reverse the decision. Add a short template for follow-up: a table of actions arising from the decision with owner placeholders and due dates. Provide guidance on keeping the record short and linking to detailed discussions instead of copying them. Remind the authors that records are immutable once accepted; a change of mind creates a new record that supersedes the old one, and both stay visible in the history.

Invented record. Title: Use a managed queue for email sending. Status: accepted. Context: Sending inside the web request slows checkout and loses messages on failure. Options: A, send inline (simple, slow); B, managed queue (small cost, retries); C, self-hosted queue (cheap, more upkeep). Decision: B, because retries matter more than saving a small monthly fee. Consequences: faster checkout; a new vendor dependency; monitoring needed. Risks: vendor outage; we will notice through a queue depth alert. Review date: in six months. Reverse if monthly cost exceeds the engineering time saved.
Illustrative only, made-up data. Your results will differ and must be reviewed.
