Google Sheets Booking and Resource Schedule With Conflict Check
Prevent double bookings in a shared sheet.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Design a booking sheet for [RESOURCE] such as a room or equipment. Time slots and rules (maximum length, cancellation notice): [SLOTS_AND_RULES]. Users and who approves: [USERS_AND_APPROVERS]. Create a bookings table (resource, date, start, end, person, status, approval), a request form if helpful [VERIFY], a calendar view, data validation, protected formulas and an instruction block. Conflict check: for each new booking row, count rows with the same resource where an existing start is earlier than the new end and an existing end is later than the new start, excluding itself; if the count is above zero, flag a conflict [VERIFY syntax using COUNTIFS]. Test table for one room on 12 March: A 09:00 to 10:00, B 10:00 to 11:00 (no conflict, back to back), C 10:30 to 11:30 (conflicts with B), D 09:30 to 09:45 (conflicts with A), E 11:30 to 12:00 (no conflict); give the expected flag for each. Always test the boundary where one booking ends exactly when another starts. Cover recurring bookings, cancellations, and time zones if the resource is shared across locations. Add a monthly usage report of booked hours divided by available hours, with arithmetic. Function availability differs by version, so mark anything unconfirmed [VERIFY].
