Subject Line Test Plan
Test subject lines without fooling yourself.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
Design a subject line testing plan. List size and send frequency: [LIST_FREQUENCY]. Tool features: [TOOL_FEATURES]. Types of emails: [EMAIL_TYPES]. Current open and click rates: [CURRENT_RATES]. Explain what can be learned from subject line tests and what cannot (opens are affected by privacy features, so clicks and replies are more reliable). Propose a plan of eight tests over two months, each changing one thing (length, question versus statement, personalisation, specificity). Provide sample pairs written for my email types, a method to decide the winner using click rate and a minimum difference, and a log template. Warn against misleading subject lines and against over-testing small lists. State assumptions about sample size honestly. Also add a pre-send checklist for subject lines (accurate, no spam triggers, readable on mobile) and a reminder not to use a subject line that the email does not deliver on. Include a short worked example of two subject lines tested on a list of 3,000 with invented click results, and a statement of what can and cannot be concluded.
