GitHub Issue Templates for Bugs and Feature Requests
Write GitHub issue templates and a config file for bug reports, feature requests and questions that collect the details maintainers need.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Create a set of GitHub issue templates for my project. Project name and what it does: [PROJECT_DESCRIPTION]. Who files issues (customers, contributors, internal team): [REPORTER_TYPES]. Information we always end up asking for: [MISSING_INFO_PATTERNS]. Where questions and support should go instead: [SUPPORT_CHANNEL]. Labels we already use: [EXISTING_LABELS]. Produce: a bug report template, a feature request template, and a question or support redirect, each as its own code block with front matter and the correct file path under .github/ISSUE_TEMPLATE/ [VERIFY]. Also produce a config.yml that controls whether blank issues are allowed and links to my support channel [VERIFY]. Bug reports must ask for expected behaviour, actual behaviour, steps to reproduce, version or environment, and logs with a reminder to remove passwords, tokens and personal data. Feature requests must ask for the problem to solve before the proposed solution. Keep each template under 20 lines of form fields and use friendly wording. Add a short maintainer reply macro for incomplete reports. Then list three things I should decide as a team, such as which labels are applied automatically. Template syntax (Markdown versus issue forms in YAML) and field types change, so flag them [VERIFY] and tell me to test the templates in a throwaway repository. Do not invent labels or links that I did not provide. Add a worked example with invented details: a small open source command line tool for renaming photos, with users on Windows and macOS, and show the finished bug template.
