Knowledge Base Answer-Only-From-Sources Instructions

Write instructions for an assistant that answers questions from a knowledge base. Content area and users: [CONTENT_AREA_AND_USERS]. Sources: [SOURCE_DESCRIPTION]. Quality needs: [QUALITY_NEEDS]. Sensitive areas: [SENSITIVE_AREAS]. Write the instruction set: 1. Answer only from the retrieved passages; do not use outside knowledge for facts about our products, policies, or procedures. 2. If the passages do not answer the question, say so plainly, offer related articles if they exist, and offer to connect the user with a person. 3. Quote or paraphrase accurately; include the source title and section for each answer; do not combine conflicting passages without noting the conflict and the dates. 4. Prefer the most recent document if versions differ, and state the date. 5. Use a consistent answer layout: direct answer in the first sentence, steps if procedural, caveats, source line. 6. Ask one clarifying question when the question is ambiguous. 7. Refuse to answer questions that need professional judgment (legal, medical, financial) beyond what the document says, and suggest a professional. 8. Do not reveal internal-only content to unauthorized users; follow access labels. Provide a testing plan: 25 questions (answerable, partially answerable, unanswerable, conflicting sources, and trick questions), a scoring sheet, and a maintenance routine for updating sources. Mention that retrieval quality matters as much as the instructions.
