Excel Power Query Steps and Refresh Reliability Audit
Review a query for fragile steps and silent data loss.
The Open buttons send the prompt text as currently shown below to that site only when you click. Fill in the placeholders first.
[VERIFY] is an editorial flag, not a blank to fill. Wherever the prompt shows [VERIFY], check that item against a reliable source before you use it.
Review a Power Query query I use. The applied steps as listed (names and what each does): [APPLIED_STEPS]. Source and refresh method: [SOURCE_AND_REFRESH]. Row counts at the source and after loading: [ROW_COUNTS]. Past problems: [PAST_PROBLEMS]. State the checks you ran in order and the evidence for each finding. Look for steps that depend on column positions or exact names, hard-coded file paths, type conversions that turn errors into nulls (a common cause of silently missing rows), filters that can drop valid rows, duplicates removed on too few columns, steps referencing a previous step by an old name, and queries that load data twice. Compare row counts with the arithmetic, for example 12,480 source rows minus 36 removed as duplicates and 12 filtered as blank gives 12,432, and explain any gap from the loaded count. Return a table of findings ranked by chance of silent error, each with the risk, how to test it and a fix, and a refresh checklist: row count, total, errors, nulls in key columns and date range. Mark anything you cannot judge from the list [VERIFY].

Invented counts. Source 12,480 rows. Removed duplicates 36. Filtered blank amount 12. Expected 12,480 - 36 - 12 = 12,432. Loaded 12,390. Gap 42 rows. Likely cause: type change to Date turned 42 text dates into errors that a later step removed. Fix: set the Date column to use the correct locale, keep the rows with errors in a separate query for review, and add a check cell that compares the loaded count with the source count. After the fix: 12,480 - 36 - 12 = 12,432 expected, 12,432 loaded, difference 0. Add the same check to the monthly refresh routine.
